The Definition of a Bottle

A bottle is a portable container in various shapes and sizes that stores and transports liquids. It has a neck and mouth that can be sealed with an internal stopper, external bottle cap or closure, or by induction sealing. Bottles can be made of glass or other materials. They can be made to be translucent, opaque or transparent. Bottles can also be made with a wide variety of finishes and colors. A bottle is usually made of a rigid material, but some bottles are made of flexible plastics.

The definition of a bottle is a continuously evolving subject in scientific and general literature. The broad and intuitive definition of a bottle centers around the intuition that a non-equilibrium state of matter appears solid but continuously relaxes into a liquid. Glass makers have used a number of different techniques to produce the curved shoulder (or “shoulder”) on some types of wine bottles. These include “bourdon” bottles that are roughly straight sided with a curved shoulder, and “burgundy” bottles that have sides that taper down about 2/3 of the height to a short cylindrical section. These are arguably the most common types of wine bottles today.

Another method for producing a shoulder is by using a “codd-neck” bottle, which was invented by British soft drink maker Hiram Codd in 1872. These bottles enclose a marble in slot bet 200 the neck of the bottle, which is held by pressure created by the carbonation. The pressure of the carbonated liquid pushes the marble against a rubber washer/gasket in the neck of the bottle to form a seal.

A less common method for producing a shoulder is called “down-tooled” or “down-molded” (White, 1978). This refers to the appearance of a lower concavity in the base of a bottle. A down-molded base is much shallower than a push-up or kick-up base and is often a giveaway of a molded bottle rather than a cast-iron or wooden mold.

Other types of bottle manufacturing techniques have also been used to make a shoulder, including the use of a “block” (a wood or iron form with a groove for the blowpipe) in the hand-blown production process. This method results in a smoother shoulder than the slug plate technique. The finish on some bottles produced this way may have a distinct, somewhat fluted appearance that is called a “ball neck.” This finish is commonly found on hair dye, sauce, pickle and flavoring extract bottles from the 1875 to mid-1885 time period and is described in more detail on the Bottle Typology page.

The Definition of Work

In scientific terms, work is the transfer of energy to or from a system. The equation for work is force times displacement, or more simply Fd. The unit for force and displacement is newton-meters, or joule (J). For example, the amount of work done when a 10 kg object is lifted from the ground to over a person’s head using a force of 10 N is equal to 20 J.

The direction of displacement relative to the direction of the force determines whether the work is positive, negative, or zero. For instance, if an object is displaced upwards by a force of 100 N, then the amount of work done on the object is equal to 100 J. However, if the force is applied at an angle of 90° to the displacement, then the amount of work done on the objects is equal to -10 J.

Work can also be done by a force that hinders the displacement of an object. For example, when a car skids to a stop on a roadway surface or a baseball runner slides into the infield dirt, friction is doing negative work on them.

The final element in the definition of work is that it must cause a change in kinetic energy Ek of the object. For a conservative force field, the change in kinetic energy is equal to the sum of the force and the displacement: W = FdEk.

Although this definition of work differs from its everyday meaning, it still captures the essence of what is needed to transform our jobs and our world. Redefining work requires shifting all workers’ time, effort, and attention away from executing routine, tightly defined tasks to identifying and addressing unseen problems and opportunities. The solution isn’t just automating processes with robots or augmenting with automation technology, reskilling and retraining to perform these new tasks, or adding employee suggestion boxes and 20 percent time to innovation/entrepreneur centers. It’s about redefining work to create more value for all.

A Glossary of Bottle Terms

A container (usually made of glass) used to hold liquids, or by extension, something preserved in a liquid, such as fruits and vegetables. The term also refers to the action of bottle up, or enclose in a vessel – to suffocate someone, for example.

A common concern among parents is leakage from bottles, which is why we only tested bottles that were rated leak-free by independent testing organizations. The more pieces and openings a bottle has, the more opportunities it has to leak. We therefore looked for bottles that were easy to assemble, and that incorporated simple, straightforward design features.

Our top pick was the Munchkin Classic Feeding Bottle, which was easy to assemble and take apart, and had large openings that were easy for baby hands to maneuver. It was also easy to refill, and it did not leak during assembly, disassembly, or while being filled. Another bottle that stood out was the Dr. Brown’s Organic Formula & Breast Milk Bottle, which was also easy to assemble and disassemble, and had a large opening that was easy for baby hands to handle. It was a bit more expensive than some of the other bottles we tested, but it was one of the few that did not leak during assembly, disassembly and while being filled or unfilled.

We also liked the Avent Classic Bottle, which was easy to assemble and disassemble, and whose large openings were easy for baby hands to maneuver. It also had a very short and concise set of instructions that were easy to follow, which was a big plus during groggy nighttime feedings. The only drawback was that the Avent was somewhat more expensive than some of the other bottles we test drove, and it did not have a volume marking on its side.

In a more scientific vein, the research that led to this article suggests that understanding how ideal glasses — glass that is close enough to a perfect disordered state to be solid — are made could help scientists understand and develop better materials, such as smartphones that are bendable or less likely to break, or nuclear waste containers that can trap uranium for longer periods of time.

The base plate is the part of a bottle mold that forms the bottom of a hand-blown bottle. It may be flat or rounded, and it can be joined to the blank mold by ghost seams on two opposite sides of the bottle. A Scope Review of the Definition of Work

Work is a broad term with many dimensions, but for this article I’d like to focus on the scientific dimension of work, a concept that can be defined as “the amount of force applied over the displacement of an object.” Force and displacement are vector quantities. Work is the scalar product (also known as the dot product in vector algebra) of those vectors.

As a scientific concept, it’s easy to see why we think of it as something that has to be done in order to create change or progress. But what does work really mean in our day-to-day lives? What are the factors that we consider when looking for work that will fit us, that will challenge and grow us, that will help achieve our career goals while also contributing to the greater good of society?

The answers to these questions aren’t always simple. But they can be found by considering the way in which work changes people, the value it adds to our lives, and its implications for future generations. Think of the time, energy and relationships we’ve spent at work – the discipline, wisdom, skills and knowledge it has given us, or perhaps the ways it has jaded or snuffed out our passions or damaged relationships, leaving us cynical and seeing others as problems to be solved.

Despite the fact that work’s nature is irrevocably changing, a number of the traditional paradigms associated with it continue to guide dominant discourses. These perspectives include a narrow view of work that is primarily about labour, remuneration and employment (Deranty, 2009).

On the other hand, there are emerging concepts that consider how social and cultural factors influence the concept of work, such as its relational character and its role in shaping individuals’ sense of identity, purpose and wellbeing (Blustein, 2011).

These emerging perspectives suggest that it is necessary to examine the definition of work in the context of changing societal trends. However, the lack of a consensus on a contemporary definition of work hinders research and should be addressed by providing conceptual clarity through a clear summary of the dimensions of work.

The aim of this scoping review is to collate a multi-disciplinary perspective of the concept of work including its conceptual boundaries, using the notion of thin and thick definitions as an initial point of departure. This enables comparison of the various definitions and helps to develop a more cohesive research agenda. The paper suggests that the taxonomy of work based on the underlying dimensions is an invaluable tool for researchers, employers and policymakers. Moreover, this framework provides a basis for a holistic and robust approach to rethinking the nature of work in our current era of rapid technological and social change. This is essential in ensuring that we continue to harness the value and benefits of work in a way that empowers employees rather than alienates them. This is only possible if we can refocus on the unseen, and that means identifying and solving nonroutine problems and uncovering new opportunities rather than viewing them as just another part of the routine execution work pie.

Types of Bottle Molds

Bottle is one of the most commonly used containers for liquids. Its use has varied widely from simple jugs for water to intricately designed containers for fine wines and spirits. The bottle’s unique properties make it a desirable container for many different products, and its appearance has often influenced the designs of other glassware. The bottle’s unique structure, and the fact that it is non-equilibrium (non-crystalline) state, allow it to flexibly expand and contract over time. This expansion and contraction gives the bottle its distinctive shape and makes it resistant to breakage.

Glassmakers make colorless bottle glass by reducing or eliminating iron and carbonaceous impurities from the raw materials used to make it, such as sand and clay. This is done by adding decolorizing agents like selenium, manganese dioxide, or arsenic to the glass batch, and may also be accomplished with chemical processing of the molten glass during the melting phase. These processes, in combination with other glassmaking techniques, produce the various colors of glass bottles.

Full sized bottle mold – A full sized mold is one which forms the base, body, shoulder, and most of the – or in some cases all of – the neck/finish on a bottle. In contrast, a half-sized mold only forms the shoulder and part of the neck. See the full sized mold illustration on the Bottle Finishes & Closures page for an example of what is meant by this term.

Dimple – A small, molded depression in the bottle neck into which the lever wire of a toggle closure device is hooked (White 1978). The dimple is usually made with the same material as the rest of the bottle neck.

Ejection mark – A circular mark left on the base of a bottle or jar by certain press-and-blow and automatic/semi-automatic machine-made bottles (like Lynch MB Two table) that left this mark when a metal rod pushed (“ejected”) the parison out of its first parison mold to move it via the grasping ring into the second and final blow mold. This process is the basis for the “hinge mold” or “key mold” variant of the hinge bottle mold discussed on the Bottle Bases page.

Laid-on ring – Ranging from crude to refined, this was a trail of glass which was trailed around and fused into the bore or neck of a bottle. This was done to strengthen these areas and to assist in a tight closure fit – but not to prevent leaking. A lot of consideration must go into deciding whether or not an episode of a TV show is a bottle episode, such as the amount of extras and guest roles in the production, the confined space in which most of the action takes place, and/or the amount of time spent re-shooting. For example, a season two episode of Girls called “One Man’s Trash” meets the criteria for a bottle episode because it contains one main cast member and one guest star, its action is confined to a standing set apartment, and the episode is lengthy. However, Succession’s “Honeymoon States” does not meet this criteria because it contains a large crowd of extras and several guest speaking roles, but the majority of the episode is filmed on a confined studio set.

Base plate – The separate mold section that formed most or all of the base of a bottle in machine-made bottle manufacturing. Unlike hinge and key molds, this type of mold usually resulted in a cup-bottom or post-base conformation on the finished bottle (White 1978). Calabash bottle/flask – A bottle produced during the mid-19th century which was similar in shape to the hard shelled gourd-like fruits of the tropical American “calabash” tree – Crescentia cujete (Gilman & Watson 1993). Bottle glass green – A coloration in certain types of bottle glass resulting from iron oxides in the sand from which the glass was blown. This coloration is less common in bottle glass than amber and green bottle glasses, and is not as desirable for colored spirits bottles.
